Creating and updating a GIS project and an interactive map

After having been able to work with Pro Natura Switzerland's head office in Basel, I was able to collaborate with Pro Natura in the canton of Vaud to create a GIS project for their center. The site, which covers an area of about 40 hectares, consists of the Grande Cariçaie nature reserve, which is home to a quarter of Switzerland's fauna and flora.

The location of the association and its nature reserve is on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, close to an SBB train station and adjacent to a residential area of the municipality of Cheseaux-Noreaz. This project bring together all their networks and conduits that can cross the plots. To do so, it was necessary to contact all public (CFF, official cadastral survey, municipalities, ...) and private (telecom, electricity suppliers, construction companies, ...) data providers to retrieve each data.

After collecting the raw data, they were classified, standardized and geo-referenced for integration into the project.

To facilitate consultation for people new to GIS, an interactive map was published on a server using the open-source software Lizmap.

Pro Natura Switzerland

Inventory of data on land cover and land use, natural environments and biodiversity.

Main objectives: to test various modern tools and data and to test their effectiveness in the implementation of fieldwork, the optimization of various internal processes and monitoring.

Write different scripts to automate certain GIS actions in order to optimize the speed and completion of tedious and repetitive tasks.

To make an inventory of the species data in the natural reserves in preparation for the realization of Dashboard in order to determine which are the inventories present on each reserve and what is their distance to the closest of certain variables.

These data based on remote sensing, modelling or surveys will then be made available to add value to the practical work of nature conservation.

Related objectives: data collection and the possibility to find open-data that could be useful in an NGO such as Pro Natura. Creation of an atlas for the more than 800 existing natural reserves.
